Kharkiv International Airport is one of the major venues of the city being reconstructed during preparation for the European Football Championship in 2012. The implementation of this large-scale project started on 1 April 2008. The reconstruction project includes the construction of a new terminal, reconstruction of the existing one, construction of a new runway and capital renovation of the apron, development of the surrounding area. After reconstruction the citizens and guests of the “first capital” will enjoy a modern airport being able to receive a variety of aircrafts, including Airbus A-320 and Boeing B-737. The new terminal with an area of over 20,000 sq.m will allow for an increase in the passenger flow up to 650,000 people per year. The hotel of Kharkiv International Airport is also to be reconstructed, while modern parking and a bus station will be constructed. According to the UEFA requirements, office buildings, waiting rooms for drivers, welcoming places, etc. will be built. The project requires the separation of arriving fans if considered necessary.
