The Annunciation Cathedral

A part and parcel of a panoramic view of that part of the city is the Annunciation Cathedral (designed by M. Lovtsov, 1888–1901). The five-dome church is designed in Byzantine style, which is accentuated in traditional decoration of facades outlined by a combination of red brick layers and light plasters, whilst the silhouette of a high-rising stepped bell tower resembles Gothic temples. Extremely beautiful are the interiors of the Cathedral: the main altar with an iconostasis made of white Carrara marble, icons on zinc boards painted by artists A. Danilevsky and M. Mikhaylov, wall painting in the style of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The Cathedral is capable of holding 4,000 people.
