Hippodrome

Kharkiv hippodrome is located at the end of Sumska Street, almost in front of the Gorky Park. This building with open metal work (designed by Z. Kharmansky, 1914) is the only hippodrome in the CIS which has preserved its original outlook. It is really surprising that this ‘bourgeois vestige’ was not demolished or reconstructed, as it was the site for working class demonstrations and revolutionary holidays. That is why the square is named The First of May Square.

The hippodrome continues to function to this present day. In warm seasons trotting races are held here on Sundays; there are also private riding schools at the hippodrome.
