Izyum

A town on the Seversky Donets River. In the 17th century the Isyum fortress was built here, and starting from 1865, the Izyum regiment was displaced there. Historical monuments of the area include the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (1684) known as one of the first buildings of the fortress (Pic. 12), St. Nicholas Church (1809–1823), the Holy Ascension Church (1819–1826), Kremyanets Mountain with its Scythian stone sculptures is the highest peak of Kharkiv Region (218m) (Pic. 13).
